Applying online directly through Covered California is a timely process and can take about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Our agents process your CoveredCA application correctly so you get the appropriate health insurance for your needs.
CoveredCA Help: Use a Certified Agent
Did you know that you can delegate one of our certified agents to help manage your CoveredCA case?
Once delegated, we can help you with:
- Reporting Changes
- Health Insurance tax Forms
- Uploading Required Documents
- Making Payments
You’ll never have to call CoveredCA again. And the best part, its totally free! As independent agents, once we are delegated to your case, we get paid a commission from the insurance companies. Agent commissions are already built into everyone’s health insurance costs so you wont see your rates increase at all! In fact, after we review your case, they could go down!
Most of these actions will require that your CoveredCA case number be “delegated” to a CalHealth certified CoveredCA agent. The delegation can be ended at any time by calling 1-800-300-1506.
Coverage Levels
Since the passage of Obamacare in 2010, all health insurance plans now follow the same general rules and coverage requirements. In general you can choose between 4 levels of coverage:
Bronze
Plan
The Covered California Bronze plan offers the lowest monthly premiums but has higher out-of-pocket costs when you receive medical services. It covers essential health benefits and provides financial protection against major medical expenses. This plan is a good option for individuals who are generally healthy and don’t anticipate frequent medical visits, but still want coverage for unexpected emergencies or serious illnesses.
Silver
Plan
The Silver plan offers a balanced approach, with moderate monthly premiums and lower out-of-pocket costs compared to the Bronze plan. It provides comprehensive coverage for essential health benefits and offers subsidies like cost-sharing reductions (CSRs) for eligible individuals and families. This plan is suitable for those who may require regular medical care and prefer a mix of affordability and coverage.
Gold
Plan
The Covered California Gold plan has higher monthly premiums, but it comes with lower out-of-pocket costs when you receive medical care. It offers comprehensive coverage for essential health benefits, making it a good choice for individuals who expect to use their health insurance frequently. This plan is ideal for those who are willing to pay higher premiums in exchange for reduced costs at the time of service.
Platinum
Plan
The Platinum plan has the highest monthly premiums but offers the lowest out-of-pocket costs when you receive medical services. It provides the most comprehensive coverage for essential health benefits, making it an excellent option for individuals who anticipate significant medical expenses and want the highest level of financial protection. This plan is well-suited for those who prioritize low out-of-pocket costs over monthly premium expenses.
Plan Types
Health Insurance can also be categorized by which doctors you can see and how freely you can see them. You can choose to enroll in one of these plan types:
PPO
Preferred Provider Organization
Usually offers the largest network of doctors and hospitals and will cover services out of network.
- Pros: you get to choose your doctor
- Cons: can be more expensive
HMO
Health Maintenance Organization
A plan that offers local network of doctors and hospitals and coordinates care through your primary care doctor, however there is no out of network coverage.
- Pros: can be more affordable
- Cons: your primary care doctor must submit referrals and you don’t always get to choose your doctors
EPO
Exclusive Provider Organization
Think of this as hybrid between HMO and PPO, you can self refer to doctors in the plan network, but there is no out of network coverage and sometimes a primary care doctor is required.
- Pros: more freedom to choose doctor compared to HMO
- Cons: no out of network coverage and sometimes care is coordinated through a primary care provider
Premium Assistance
The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) also created state run exchanges. Our exchange here in California is called Covered California, or CoveredCA for short. CoveredCA is not an insurance company, instead they evaluate your application for health insurance and help pay for all or a portion of your monthly bill. Eligibility is conditional as qualification for premium assistance is based on income and family size.
